The purposes of this is to provide you (as a prospective study participant) information that may affect your decision as to whether or not to participate in this evidenced based practice project and to record the consent of those who agree to be involved in the study.
RESEARCHERS Heather M. Ross, DNP, Clinical Instructor in the College of Nursing and Health Innovation and Wayne McIntosh RN, DNP- Student at Arizona State University has invited your participation in an evidence based inquiry (EBI).
STUDY PURPOSE The purpose of the EBI is to learn more about how the use of educating transgender individuals about transgender related healthcare issues and how that impacts resilience and decreases stigma associated with healthcare experiences.
DESCRIPTION OF RESEARCH STUDY If you decide to participate, then you will join a study involving non-experimental, observational study of resilience and its affect on stigma around healthcare experiences. This research will involve an educational program with a pre-test using the Patient Health Questionnaire, World Health Organization’s Quality of Life Scale, and the Resilience Scale that was developed by Gail Wagnild, RN, PhD with her permission. The educational program will consist of teaching the use of resilience core and its five characteristics of purposeful life, perseverance, equanimity, self-reliance, and existential aloneness. It will also involve using these characteristics to improve the conversation around the healthcare experience
If you say YES, then your participation will last for one hour long session and a follow up post-test in one month involving the above surveys.
You must be at least 18 years old to participate in this study.
RISKS There are no known risks from taking part in this study.
BENEFITS Although there may be no direct benefits to you, the possible benefits of your participation in the research are improved health care processes, outcomes, and satisfaction in the future from knowledge gained through this study.
CONFIDENTIALITY All written and recorded information obtained in this study is strictly confidential. The results of this research study may be used in reports, presentations, and publications, but the researchers will not identify you. In order to maintain confidentiality of your records, your name will not be included on any records or forms associated with this study. Each person studied will have a number assigned. Only Wayne McIntosh and Heather Ross will have access to records.
WITHDRAWAL PRIVILEGE Participation in this study is completely voluntary. It is ok for you to say no. Even if you say yes
now, you are free to say no later, and withdraw from the study at any time. If you choose to not participate directly with the researcher, your data will be destroyed and will not be used.
